Random Fact About Robert
I saw Marvin Gaye
About this time in 1983 my dad took me to the NBA All-Star Game at the Forum. I still have the program. The line up’s are nuts. This would be a big city story about a sports fanatic season ticket holding Jewish accountant (had his tickets in the same seats from the moment the Lakers arrived in Los Angeles) his Magic Johnson crazy kid and an afternoon in a building (the game used to be played in the afternoon) with the best basketball players on the planet. We had pre game drinks in the Forum Club, this was well before they had cake for the headliners.
And yes, Marvin Gaye sang the National Anthem.
I don’t know how many times I still say this but I’ll say it again: Basketball as sport has been at the center of world wide culture for as long as I can remember and still is.
That love, becomes a poem for a different Valentine’s day.
Marvin wore a perfect suit and sang with sequencer before I even knew what that was. I wore a Jerry West Basketball camp t-shirt and Kareem Abdul Jabbar Adidas and sat next to my dad.
I’d do it again without a second thought.
